spring 2023

letter from the editors

So, I climb onto a paper horse, surprisingly sturdy . . . and I let it guide me down the hallway. The hallway is a shrine of paper. Rejection letters, short stories, and an entire screenplay peel off the walls like a fungus to reveal a chain of photographs clipped to the wall.  —Round Trip

Dear Reader,

When you think of destinations, perhaps you will imagine a plant of some kind, or temperature, as a concept all on its own. Perhaps, to you, a destination is a tumultuous, mountainous thing. A difficult thing. Yet, imagine a freight train of butterflies . . . raging with wonder (A Fatalistic Phenomenon).

Perhaps, today, a destination is an elusive, illusory fragment that sometimes leaves without you, or is sometimes more of a memory than a plan. Or maybe there actually is a buoyant, wonderful destination that sails through your imagination at the thought, joyful from every angle.

The poems, stories, artistry, and authors’ notes that our contributors have shared with us have reminded us that some things are only good with all the layers. It’s an atrocity to leave any of them out—they all mix together perfectly (Late Night Falooda). And again: And as they mix realities, / Their voices let me find my peace (Audiobooks). And again.

Readers, with the Spring 2023 issue of Sapere Aude, we are inviting you to think of all these things and more! We are so grateful to our contributors, readers, editors, and advisors for bringing themselves to this journal.

This journal is now yours, intended to inspire you wherever you are now and compel you toward all manner of destinations to come. We hope you will find what you’re looking for, and many things that you weren’t.

Sincerely,

The Staff of Sapere Aude
