Fruit Flies

You are giving up

a love so sweet

fruit flies come to die in it

Once it is gone

your tongue will never find

How heavy

the promises

woven in kisses

You lost me

to bitter words

wrapped in contradictions

Still

i love you

in spite of this

So like those flies

i will flutter down

and die in it

creator's notes:

I wrote this piece during an "off" period of a relationship I was in. There is nothing more chaotic than the highs and lows of toxic love. Yet, when you're in the middle of it, there is the false semblance of control over your involvement in the cycle. "Fruit Flies" deals with the knowledge that something is wrong for you and the choice to succumb to it anyways--a death of logic in favor of the heart.
