guidelines & information

  • how do i submit?
    sapere aude opens for submissions in the beginning of each semester. submissions open following the announcement of the semester's theme! follow us on instagram to stay updated!
  • why does the theme matter?
    each volume of sapere aude has a specific theme (e.g. revolution, identity, intimacy) for contributors to utilize as a foundation for their compositions. submissions are paired with creator commentary, a space where you can highlight how you personally connected your work with the theme. we dare you to make unique, unexpected connections.
  • why should i submit?
    sapere aude showcases your work in a professional/collegiate publication — an important addition to any résumé or curriculum vitae when applying for a job or graduate school; an accepted submission could lead to future collaborations with faculty or fellow students or other creative or academic opportunities. sapere aude provides a platform for students to experience the publication process and to receive constructive feedback on their work in a safe, supportive environment.
  • what file types do you accept?
    photos: .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .gif stories, essays, poetry, text: .doc, .pdf plays & screenplays: .pdfs audio: Soundcloud links video: Vimeo or YouTube links
  • are there any restrictions?
    yes. our word limit for nonfiction submissions is 2,000, while short stories and screenplays are restricted to 2,500 words. we are a departmental publication; therefore we can only accept work from current or alumni members of the Chapman University Honors Program. submissions should be original, unplagiarized work. we cannot accept ai-generated content or replicas. express your individuality! we accept both simultaneous submissions & work that has already been published, just share a note of where and when! if your work appears in sapere aude, you may also re-publish anytime, just add an acknowledgment. there is no monetary award for publication.
  • how are submissions reviewed?
    during the review process, submissions are read anonymously by the editorial team. please remove identifying details from the document and file name. the submission form will ask you to mark applicable content warnings.
  • what happens after my submission is reviewed?
    we strive to review submissions on a rolling basis. after your submission is reviewed by our team, you will be contacted through email regarding whether or not your piece was selected for publication. selected literary submissions (poetry, prose, essays, short stories, etc.) are likely to receive feedback on grammar and spelling. writers can work with a member of our team to polish up their piece. creators have artistic freedom to employ intentional grammatical errors, improper language; just communicate these elements with our team!
  • what other information will i be asked for?
    generally, our submission form will ask for the following alongside your piece. title of piece creator name, major, year creator commentary a space where you may: articulate how your piece connects to the theme contextualize your creation make personal connections describe the creative process & more! checklist: content warnings
